Hysteroscopy is a minor surgery performed in the hospital (or occasionally in the office). It is a way to look inside the uterus and may help the doctor diagnose and treat a uterine problem. A hysteroscope is a thin, telescope-like device that is inserted into the uterus through the vagina and cervix. A liquid or gas may be used to expand the uterus for better viewing. Some reasons for this procedure may be:
- Abnormal uterine bleeding
- Abnormal growths
- Infertility
- Repeated miscarriage
- Adhesions
Hysteroscopy is best done during the first week just after completion of a menstrual cycle. Laparoscopy is often times done along with hysteroscopy.
