Colposcopy is a way of looking at the cervix through a special magnifying device called a colposcope. It shines a light onto the vagina and cervix and can enlarge the normal view by 2-60 times. This allows the doctor to look for problems that cannot be seen by the eye alone.
Some reasons for Colposcopy:
- Abnormal pap smear
- Genital warts
- Cervicitis (inflamed cervix)
- Polyps (non-cancerous growths)
This procedure is done in the office and usually tolerated very well. If a biopsy is taken , it will be sent to a lab for study.
